CALENDAR OF EVENTS
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! Several artists recently joined the Artists' Guild just before or during Corry Fest. Photographer Lawrence Scofield, pastor of the Episcopal Church in Corry joined in late June. Two of his photographs were displayed during the shows. Judith Snyder of Corry joined and displayed several unique paintings on mirrors. We look forward to seeing more of the art of these talented members.BILL CZARNECKI PRESENTS All who came to the June meeting went away totally inspired by the art and personality of Bill Czarneck. From his awesome display of a set of 4 original paintings - to the demo on how to make a detail brush from the hairs of another brush and some super glue - to the often emotional tale of how he creates - members came away with an insight on how an artist creates artwork as a vocation."Czar" sells only prints of his paintings. He often spends a year or even two on each piece. This is a long time on just one painting, especially as this is his only job. He didn't say what one of his prints sells for, but he did say he has numerous orders for a painting, often before he even starts it, let alone when it is finished. The paintings he brought to the meeting were an original set of 4. People who purchase his work usually buy all four pieces once they are available. Members learned much from the question & answer time and were enlightened on how to have prints made of one's art. At one point "Czar" expressed the idea that he'd like to have a critique of our artwork sometime. We hope this happens, because he certainly knows what he's talking about when he describes the creation process in art. SUNNY SKIES & WARM TEMPERATURES GRACED CORRY FEST In spite of torn up streets and poor parking facilities, the city park was full of people and festivities for the June 30 and July 1 celebration "Corry Fest." Many attendees visited the Artists' Guild show on Saturday, and several works were sold and/or commissioned.Because we assist the CAFAC in taking care of the art part of "Sunday In the Park," the Artists' Guild is not charged for our booth etc. Because of last year's rain event, we decided to have a large tent placed over the judged art area, instead of the usual snow fence. The Fine Arts Council agreed to pay for part of the rental fee, and promised to put it in the budget for next year's grant application. We do have to pay the rental fee for the canopy "booth" we use to secure our things overnight. Thanks to Evelyn Merkle and her late husband, Don, we rent it at a reduced rate. THE SIP COMMITTEE THANKS YOU WHO HELPED!!! Without the help of many members, we would not be able to effectively put on this community outreach. SIP chairperson Carolyn Vanderhoff extends special thanks to the following:
SOME STATISTICS FROM THE SIP JUDGED SHOW
SEVERAL MEMBERS NOW SUFFERING SERIOUS ILLNESSES Quite a few of our members were unable to assist in the recent community outreach. Several have been very ill. If you could contact them in some way, it would let them know that we care about them and miss them a lot.Evelyn Merkle (cancer)(Art was at SIP & exhibited, but has recently been very ill and is still unable to help out with our outreaches) DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA FOR A THEME FOR OUR SEPTEMBER MEETING? In the past we have celebrated "5," guessed baby pictures, and dealt with "8." September 10, 2007 we'll be marking our 10th anniversary. It's hard to believe we've been an organization for ten years! We've become a presence in our community. People look forward to our Spring Shows. Sadly we've lost a few members, but our membership keeps growing. Please consider how we can make this year's anniversary celebration special. Ideas will be discussed at the August meeting. If you're unable to attend, call, write, or e-mail the pres. to express your idea(s).ARTIST OF THE MONTH NOW A THING OF THE PAST Dennis Hibar has placed the files he set up for our web site on a disc. This will help Steve Campbell as he takes over this job. Many members have expressed the opinion that we maintain a web site. It is still undecided as to whether to keep it as is or to purchase a site with many more options. Even though we have discussed this at several meetings, we haven't been able to decide on this issue. If you have e-mail, please send your ideas to Chris Schalles or to Steve Campbell, if you haven't already done so. Currently you can reach our website the same as always. We will let you know when/if this changes. You can also send your comments to carolyn_vanderhoff@hotmail.com . (That is an underline between first and last name.)WORKSHOPS AT VANDEROFFS Currently Carolyn is taking a break from the Monday night workshops at her home. However, anyone wanting help with your art may call her @ 663-5684 and set up a time to meet and discuss your art, or work on it there.STILL AVAILABLE A while back a donation of art supplies was made to the Artists' Guild. Included were a number of books on painting techniques, as well as a large supply of oil paints. The books are now in the ever expanding studio library. Most of the painting supplies are at Vanderhoff's. Any member may have and use them to create their art.DEAN'S CIGAR STORE WOODEN INDIAN IS SOLD! Dean Jukes has maintained his membership in the Artists' Guild. He now lives in South Carolina, so is unable to participate in our events. Members will remember the year Dean carved the life-sized cigar store Indian. We have a video that shows some of the steps Dean took to bring the large block of wood to life. It is also documented on our web site under Spring Shows. The video is in our studio library.Recently a phone call and an e-mail arrived from Dean. He had just sold the life-sized sculpture to a local merchant. It now resides in the show room of a recreational vehicle store where it continues to receive the recognition it deserves. Congratulations Dean! CORRY PUBLIC LIBRARY KIDS MAKE ART IN THE PARK AG member and Corry Public Library's Children's Librarian has a lot of "storytimes" that involve art as well as reading. Just prior to the Corry Fest events, Librarian Bonnie Leichliter and assistant Carolyn Vanderhoff had a 'storytime' in the city park. About 40 children participated. A story was read by Vanderhoff entitled "The Art Lesson." After this the children were given paper and drawing materials and encouraged to look around them and draw what they saw or imagined, having been inspired by the story. Examples of children's drawings and paintings were shown as further inspiration. The children were then encouraged to enter artwork in the Sunday In the Park judged show. A brief explanation of how they could "frame" and make ready to "hang" their art was given. It was noticed that some of the children did participate in SIP.SOME FINANCIAL STITISTICS FROM CORRY FEST The auction of the Art Kit was very successful. The original purchase price was $52.75. During "Reflections From Within" chances received came to a total of $160.00. During Corry Fest, chances totaled $106.00. This made a total of $266.00 received. Subtract $52.75 from $266.00 = $214.25 total profit from the Art Kit bidding. Two of the 3 Chair-ity Chairs were bid on. The total raised was $47.60. Note cards sold for a total of $37.25. This included one 2007 set for $6.00. The rest were individual cards @ 25 cents each. GREG DICK JOINS Before Peggy passed away, she began teaching her husband, Greg to create art. As a lasting tribute to her, Greg continued to develop his talent. Using his chain saw, he began creating a large wooden sculpture of an owl. It stands in his yard to date. He decided to continue to follow Peggy's teaching and thus created another owl. He finished it off with other wood carving tools. He entered this one in the SIP judged show and it received a 1st place award. Greg has usually helped with the set-up/tear down of our events, even though he was not a member. Now, he has chosen to join us in earnest, finishing out his wife's term, and then re-joining in September.THOUGHTS FROM "FORBES BOOK OF BUSINESS QUOTATIONS" "It is better to create than to be learned, creating is the true essence of life" -- Reinhold Niebuhr"Every child is an artist.
