YEAR NINE
SEPTEMBER 12, 2005 Members and their guests met at Glenn Mead Lodge to celebrate the end of the eighth and the beginning of the ninth year since the Artists' Guild was founded. After a tureen dinner, officers for the new year were elected. Chris Schalles was elected president, while Carolyn Vanderhoff became Vice President. Many participated in the "Eight" "8" feature, representing eight years as a guild in the area. A campfire finale provided by Jerry Rushin and a song fest, featuring the guitar and vocal music of Linda Jukes and Dan McEldowney, made a fitting ending to this memorable celebration. Carolyn Silvis became a member at this meeting. APRIL 21, 2005 From 8 a.m. till after 9 p.m., AG members brought to the Smith Ed center, up to 4 pieces of art in preparation for "Artists In Action." The set-up crew was on hand to do their job. Our 3-D artists also set up their areas. The "fakes" room was arranged as well. The plants arrived early the next morning (Friday). Programs were made ready and signs were hung. APRIL 24, 2006 The Artists' Guild "The Artists Amongst Us" reception (6 - 9 p.m.) was sponsored by the CAFAC. They provided refreshments and live music. The guitar music of Gary Johnston provided a charming background for the show. Many members were on hand to greet invited guests. The two 2005 scholarship winners presented a display of artwork. One of these, Ariel Neckers, was on hand to greet guests. The turn-out was one of the largest yet on reception night. Along with the program and "People's Choice" ballot, each attendee was given a pen with the AG address including the web address on it. APRIL 25, 2006* The "Handicap Hour" (from noon - 1 p.m.) was unattended this year. Dennis, Bonnie, and Carolyn used the time to complete photographing and documenting the exhibit. The regular show time was 1 - 5 p.m. There was a noticeable absence of 3-dimensional artwork. However the Intarsia wood carvings of Christopher Randall along with wood carvings of John McEntyre and "Buck" Amy helped round out this area of the show. Dan McEldowney set up a photography demo that was very popular both days. APRIL 26, 2006* This closing day of "The Artists Amongst Us" saw the largest attendance yet on closing day. The demos of Shea Gibowitz, Debi Stevens (watercolor) and Andrea Lehman (calligraphy) were popular. More people had a chance to view the artists at work by having them in the same area as the exhibits. Twelve packs of note cards were sold, as well as 8 art pieces. Ten of Chris Schalles' booklets and 28 Corry post cards were sold. All of Gerty's paintings that were available for purchase were sold. The "Fabulous Fakes" room was received rave reviews. A call for "Chair-ity Chairs" went out. It was decided to rent the canopy once again. It was agreed to give two scholarships this year. Receiving the art scholarship award of $500.00, will be Ariel Neckers, AG member and daughter of Wendy Neckers (also an AG member). Ariel is attending Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and was one of last year's scholarship winners. Also receiving $500.00 will be Amanda Jean Durfey. She plans to attend Edinboro University in the fall and major in Film/Cinema Production. Marilyn Wood and Peggy Dick agreed head-up the monthly program committee. At this meeting, Danielle Elchynski from the City Cycle & Craft Shop was the guest speaker. She told us about the art supplies available and asked for suggestions as to what members might need. She concluded her presentation by giving everyone present a discount certificate for Grumbacher products. New members were Leytha and Jerica Jaquith, Dolly Hooven, Christopher Randall, and Joyce McChesney. Shea Gobowicz rejoined just prior to the spring show. MAY 21, 2006 The woodcarvers of the Artists' Guild participated in "Mozart 'n Wood" presented by the Corry Area Arts Council Auxiliary, Inc. Exhibiting were AG carvers Dan Morgan, John McIntyre and Charles "Doc" Myers. The proceeds from concert and art show presentation will be put toward the Corry Arts Council Auxiliary Scholarship Fund. JUNE 12, 2006 During this meeting, plans were formulated for Corry Fest/Sunday In the Park. New members were taken on a visit to the studio rooms housed on the 3rd floor. A call went out for members to create "Chair-ity Chairs". Some chairs available for overhaul were located in the studio rooms. Carolyn Vanderhoff agreed to head up the Corry Fest committees. Set-up crew included Jerry Rushin, John Payer, Jack Downey, Paul Dingle, Peggy & Greg Dick, and Dan McEldowney, Leytha Jaquith and Carolyn Vanderhoff. It was decided to ask DiAnn Bova to contact V. J. Kaiser, to see if he'd be willing to be the SIP judge. Other SIP committees were formed. The guest speaker was Betty Bird. She demonstrated one-stroke painting techniques. During the presentation she completed 2 paintings and afterwards gave them to two of our members, upon correctly answering trivia questions. JUNE 29, 2006 AG member & Children's Librarian, Bonnie Leichliter asked other members of the Guild to assist the Corry Public Library with a special "Animal Tales" story time, and at the same time encourage children to enter the SIP judged exhibit. Carolyn Vanderhoff read a book to the children about a bear who became an artist. Then the children were invited to create "art for the park" with the art materials provided. Artists' Guild members assisting in this were Ruth Williams, Alice Rushin, Nancy Klingensmith, Leytha & Jerica Jaquith, Carolyn Silvis & Whitney Walters. The artwork of Arlene Elsea could be viewed all around the children's department. JUNE 30, 2006 This was set up day for Corry Fest. A number of members and friends & family helped outline the perimeter and set up the snow fence, as well as transport the display units and other stuff from our studio rooms. JULY 1, 2006 Artists' Guild members participated in our AG exhibit held in the judging area. The weather was beautiful. A number of AG members assisted in the Sales Booth. Several art works were sold, but otherwise the sales booth was not very busy. Andrea Lehman demonstrated calligraphy drawing and Carolyn Vanderhoff demonstrated oil painting techniques. Alice & Jerry Rushin displayed the "Chair-ity Chairs" All but two chairs were bid on. JULY 3, 2006 Ruth Williams, Chris Schalles and Lynne Myers helped artists register for the judged event. Dan McEldowney supervised the first hanging of artwork. Several times the artwork was removed from the display units and tables due to rain. Many members came out to help, only to find that all they could do was take down whatever could be rescued and seek shelter in the Guild's little canopy/booth. The only sunny spot on a disastrous day of rain was the judging of artwork by V. J. Kaiser. He remained his witty self as he did the judging inside the canopy, one category at a time. Members who could squeeze into the shelter got a humorous lesson in judging artwork. Debi Stevens received "Best of Show" among other awards. Other members placing were Anne Chillock, Bonnie Leichliter, Dar Wolcott, Diane Bova, Chris Schalles, J. Lynne Myers, Andrea Lehman, Peggy Dick, Alice Rushin, Dan Morgan and Carolyn Vanderhoff. JULY 10, 2006 President Chris Schalles presided at this meeting. A review of the Corry Fest/Sunday in the Park activities was on the agenda. After a very wet Sunday In the Park, members voted to rent the large Erie Plastics tent for next year and be prepared, rain or shine. It is probable that the CAFAC will help us write a grant to pay for this. Members also voted to pay Wendy Neckers for the beautiful portrait of Gerty White. Plans were made to present the portrait to the Corry Historical Museum since Gerty was such an historical personality in our area. For the program, Wendy Neckers presented a demo/talk on drawing portraits. Those present were encouraged to participate upon instructions from Wendy. New members were Anne Chillock and Pauline Vaos. AUGUST 14, 2006 Plans were made for our 9th anniversary. Dorothy Jackman suggested we feature "create a painting" with all who will, painting a section of a large canvas in a free-form/ whatever you want type of art. Suggested paint - acrylic or oils. Guest speaker was Mary Darling, well-known china painter. She showed examples of her work and explained the numerous steps involved in creating the beautiful designs seen on pieces of hand-painted china. She invited members to visit the China painters' exhibition that will be held in Erie on Saturday, September 23, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sunday, September 24, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. A display of Mary's work, as well as that of two other local china painters can be viewed in the showcase at the Corry Public Library. You can also pick up a flier with additional info about the show & sale. This flier included a coupon to enter in free drawing to win a hand painted plate. Note: The "agenda" meetings
(usually held
on Saturdays before each monthly meeting) aren't mentioned in this
chronology, but this doesn't lesson their importance. Likewise, many
committee meetings haven't been listed in their entirety in order that
this chronology might be more compact. Thank you one and all for all
that you do to make our Guild a good happening in our community. We
have several CDs containing the exhibits which have appeared on our web
site since its beginning in November of 1997. Members may borrow them
at any time. They are available at the Corry Public Library. You don't
need to have a library card to do this. Just simply ask for them at the
front desk, and leave your name and phone # on a card that is with the
disks. THE OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE CHAIRPEOPLE WISH TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR
HELPING IN MANY OR ALL OF OUR ACTIVITIES THIS PAST YEAR. OUR
MONTHLY MEETINGS HAVE ALSO BEEN VERY WELL ATTENDED. WHILE WE
HAVE LOST A FEW MEMBERS, WE CONTINUE TO GROW. (OUR
MEMBERSHIP STANDS AT 69 NOW!) IT IS DUE IN PART TO EVERYONE
BEING WILLING TO SHARE IN THE WORK, AND LIKEWISE SHARE IN THE FUN OF
CREATING AND PRESENTING OUR ART TO THE PUBLIC. THE ARTISTS' GUILD
IS AN ASSET TO THE CORRY AREA COMMUNITIES! |
